Q. The drop-downs in RefWorks disappear when I try to click on them. For instance, I'm having trouble opening attachments. Can you help?

I you are using Internet Explorer, the first thing I'd recommend is switching to a different browser

The RefWorks drop-downs are java-dependent and Internet Explorer processes Java more slowly than other browsers.   Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome work better. Both are available free on the internet.   You would probably want to try Firefox first since RefWorks doesn’t officially support Google Chrome.  Despite the lack of RefWorks support for Chrome, in most respects, it works as well or better than the other browsers.

If viewing attachments is the primary problem, an extra click will make it possible to view these without use of a java-dependent drop-down. 

If you just want to see one attachment from a page of RefWorks records,

1.    it’s easiest to click the “magnifying glass” icon. 

2.    This produces a “View full reference” pop-up with a thumbnail of your attachment that can be clicked without difficulty.

If you want to open lots of attachments on a certain page,

1.    it would probably be easier to switch to the “Full View” (red arrow below). 

2.    Then all the records will appear with attachment thumbnails (blue arrow) until you switch back to “standard view”
