If clicking the "cite" link next to one of your references in Write-n-Cite does not produce code in your Word document, consider the following possibilities:
1. Are you trying to insert code in a "read-only" document such as an opened (but not saved) e-mail attachment? If so, save the document to your computer, open the saved copy and try using Write-n-Cite to insert code into the saved document.
2. Do you see the name of your document at the top of the Write-n-Cite window? If, rather than the name of your document, you see a "Load document" link; click that "Load Document" link. Does the name of your document now appear at the top of the Write-n-Cite window? If so, try clicking the "cite" link again. Does this produce the appropriate code in your document? If not, you may need to close Write-n-Cite, save and close all Word documents and then reopen Word and Write-n-Cite. Sometimes it's necessary to restart the computer.
3. If, rather than the name of your document, you see the name of a different document at the top of the Write-n-Cite screen; you will probably need to close Write-n-Cite, save and close all Word documents and then reopen Word and Write-n-Cite. Sometimes it's necessary to restart the computer.
4. Are you using Write-n-Cite 2 for Windows (no "Tools" menu) with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Word 2007 or Word 2010. Write-n-Cite 2 is not compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Word 2007 or Word 2010. Save and close your Word document, close Write-n-Cite, open your RefWorks account, use the RefWorks "Tools" menu to select "Write-n-Cite", and download and install "Write-n-Cite III." You will be asked whether you want to uninstall the preiously installed version of Write-n-Cite, say "yes."
5. Are you using Write-n-Cite 2 for Mac with Word for Mac 2008? Write-n-Cite 2 is not compatible with Word for Mac 2008. You will have to download Write-n-Cite 2.5 for Mac. Save and close your Word document, close Write-n-Cite, open your RefWorks account, use the RefWorks "Tools" menu to select "Write-n-Cite", and download and install "Write-n-Cite 2.5." You will be asked whether you want to uninstall the preiously installed version of Write-n-Cite, say "yes."
