Applying "Fair Use" guidelines allows you to scan a book chapter, selected pages from a book, or a single journal article from an issue for a class.  However, it is important to follow the recommended guidelines below:

• The purpose is for educational use (teaching)
• Material scanned is published and relevant to the course
• Less is best. 
• Place the scanned document on Canvas so only students taking the course have access to the reading
• Whenever possible, use security features in Canvas to ensure students cannot download the scanned document
• Remove the scanned document at the end of the course
• Attach a copyright cover sheet to the scanned document with the suggested text:

Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproduction of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If electronic transmission of reserve materials is used for purposes in excess of what constitutes “fair use”, that user may be liable for copyright infringement. These materials are made available for the educational purposes of students enrolled at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
