Some folks are used to working with Write-n-Cite III and used to seeing a Write-n-Cite program on their computers or in an “Add-ins” ribbon in Word.  Write-n-Cite 4 does not appear as a separate program and does not appear in the “Add-ins” ribbon.  Instead it creates a new, “RefWorks” or “Proquest” ribbon (see figure below).

  • If you don’t see a RefWorks ribbon, did you close Word before installing Write-n-Cite?  If not, close Word and try installing Write-n-Cite 4 again.
  • If you had Word closed while installing Write-n-Cite, and you saw the “Finished” page of the installation, you will need to check to see if the Write-n-Cite/RefWorks add-in has been disabled.
    • Use the “File” menu to select “Options.”
    • In the “Options” pop-up box, select “Add-ins”
    • Look for the “Write-n-Cite”, “WNC”, “PQ for Word” or “RefWorks” add-in (see arrow a in the figure below).  The add-in may be in the list at the top of the page, but its more likely to be in the “Inactive Application Add-ins” or “Disabled” list.  You may have to scroll down (arrow b in figure) to find the add-in.
    •  If the Write-n-Cite/WNC/PQ for Word/RefWorks add-in is in the “Inactive” list, leave the drop-down indicated by arrow c in the figure on the default “COM Add-ins” setting and hit the “Go” button (arrow d).  Click on the box in front of the Write-n-Cite/WNC/PQ for Word/RefWorks Add-in and “OK” it.  Wait a bit to see if the RefWorks ribbon appears.  If not, try closing and opening Word.  The Add-in loads during Word start-up.  If the Word start-up is very quick, it’s possible that Word isn’t going through a full start-up.  You may have to restart the computer to get Word to go through a full start-up.
    • If the Write-n-Cite/WNC/PQ for Word/RefWorks add-in is in the “Disabled” list.  Use the drop-down labelled “c” in the figure above to select “Disabled” add-ins and click the “Go” button (indicated by arrow d in the figure above).  Enable the Write-n-Cite/WNC/PQ for Word/RefWorks add-in.  Wait a bit to see if the RefWorks ribbon appears.  If not, try closing and opening Word.  The Add-in loads during Word start-up.  If the Word start-up is very quick, it’s possible that Word isn’t going through a full start-up.  You may have to restart the computer to get Word to go through a full start-up.
